What is the difference between a gondola and a tram?
Hmmm.. folks keep asking me this…. Is it because Washington resorts don’t have modern lifts? Check out this awesome rollback at Hyak that my good friend Joel Pryde found.
Tram
A tram consists of two giant carrier cars attached to the same cable loop such that one car goes up while the other goes down. Typically skiers and boarders carry their equipment inside the tram. New york times claims trams are going the way of wooden skis.

Since snowbird managed to drill a giant hole tunnel through the mountain, the chair only pass is a super deal.
Gondolas!
Gondolas are smaller (typically 6 to 8 person) enclosed cars spaced apart like traditional ski lifts. Often gondolas have bench seats and ski/snowboard holders outside so you don’t have to get snow on your unitard.
Open Air Gondola

The Cabriolet at The Canyons in Park City is an open air gondola that transports snow people from the parking lot to the resort base.
An “open air gondola” is not enclosed, hence open to air. I only know of one of these.
