Stuck in Snow: top 3 snow related closures in the life of Blythe J Dunham

Too much snow can sometimes be meh

Too much snow can sometimes be meh

So everyone seems to be making lists these days, I thought I would make one of my own in honor of the season’s best storm. Sometimes the impossible happens: your jacuzzi is too hot,  there is too much snow or like the old Chinese proverb translated by Joel Pryde goes, you throw your meat bun at a dog?

1. Red Mountain Rossland, Canada

Storm chasing/ass master 2005 began in Rossland, Canada which hosts the awesome tree dancing pachinko funtime ski runs. It snowed. Roads closed. Joel, I, and the people of Rossland were trapped with the best snowy funtime ever. Everyday involved convincing the hostel to accept our weird USD funny money for one more nite of stuckage.

2.Las Leñas Malargüe, Argentina

Tom and I got stuck on a farm in middle of nowhere Argentina because it snowed too much to ride the jam packed Bob Marley fueled collectivo van 1.5 hours to the resort.  I could not figure out why we had to separate the organic basura trash from the recycling until I saw the giant snow chancos (piggies) eating it.

3.Snowbird SL,UT

Snowbird is my favorite resort of all time due to (best quality snow, consistent snow, rad out of control gnar cliff pow snow). However, driving to and from it on the Little Cottonwood Canyon is insanely frustrating. I guess I should not sum my snow stuckage, but these factors and more puts da Bird in the top 3 snow related closures in the life of Blythe J Dunham. (Fortunately, unlike others I have not had to sleep in the tram center on the floor)

  • Stuck in tram center with Ari (illegal to go outside)
  • Not allowed to eat sandwich since car in avalanche danger
  • Waiting in line 2 hours to go up the pass since some a-hole van forgot to put on chains.
  • Arriving to mountain and having to leave since roads are closed 4 hours during your meeting.

Too little snow

On the opposite hand, the winner of the worst snow closure due to too little snow goes to: The ENTIRE PAC NW 2004/2005 Snow season for which resorts were open a total of 5 days.  Two good things came out of this suckage:

  • Blythe had a revelation to move to Utard and seasonally live near good snow
  • Booth Creek Resorts did some damn good business and gave all Snoqualmie pass holders a free 2006 season pass. The rest of the northwest resorts, enjoy your global warming induced water skiing. Ill be on a real mountain in real snow.
