What the funicular?

February 5, 2009

It seems that funicular was not included in my original post describing  the difference between gondolas and trams.

Funiculars, also called inclines, are special trams that wikipedia defines as

a type of self-contained cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails.

According to mapsoftheworld.com, funiculars are mostly favorable for the elderly and handicapped persons. Good to know. Also, according to me, ski funiculars must exist in either the old world or the third world because I have never been on one that involves snow equipment. However, during the non-winter months when the Steelers are not winning Superbowls, one thing you can do in Pittsburgh that doesn’t involve driving to West Virginia for beer on Sunday is ride the inclines.

Getting old makes Pittsburghs Duquesne Incline look bigger than Pittsburgh itself. I like to come here when the party in my house sucks, because it usually means that my roommates will get citations for being lame.
